Joan Turnour ( Cope) 1943 In the tapestry of World War II heroes, Joan Turnour's thread was quietly woven. A Firbank boarder in the early 40's and an exceptional codebreaker, Joan's work remained shrouded in secrecy for decades. Joan Cope joined the Women's Royal Australian Naval Service as soon as she was old enough. She was stationed at Monterey Flats in Albert Park, where she immersed herself in a cryptic world of letters and numbers as part of an allied secret unit dedicated to cracking Japanese codes. Her tireless efforts alongside her colleagues were pivotal in deciphering enemy communications. As she had signed the official secret's act, she could never reveal the true nature of her work, until in 2010 when she received a letter a medal from the British Prime Minister, David Cameron recognising her wartime efforts Joan's story was told by Channel 7 on ANZAC day, where both she and a 100-year-old veteran were featured.
